Balangir: A man was arrested in Odisha's Balangir district for allegedly selling his five-day-old son for Rs 2.5 lakh in a shocking incident.

Santosh Patel, the accused, was apprehended by police in Jhankarpada village, Titlagarh block, Bolangir district, for allegedly selling the boy to a person in Kalahandi. A middleman in the alleged sale transaction was also apprehended.

Santosh and middleman Sheikh Ramadan have been arrested in this case by Titilagarh police.

Santosh and his wife Pushpa Patel welcomed their fourth child at Titilagarh hospital, according to sources. Due to his extreme poverty, Santosh allegedly sold his five-day-old baby to Raja from the Kalahandi district for Rs 2.5 lakh with the assistance of his neighbor Sheikh.

Titilagarh police registered a suo motu case against Santosh and Sheikh after receiving information about the incident and arrested them.

Zarina Begum, Sheikh's wife, refuted the charge and accused police of torturing her husband in custody.

She claimed that while her husband was detained, the police threatened to kill him and assaulted him.

She claimed that the child's father had no objections to selling the child and that he received Rs 2.5 lakh from a childless man who had traveled from Kalahandi to Titilagarh to purchase the child. Her husband, she claimed, was not involved in any wrongdoing.
