Bhubaneswar: The arrival of the monsoon season has resulted in an increase in dengue cases in Odisha. So far, 175 dengue cases have been identified in the state.

According to Public Health Director Niranjan Mishra, a total of 93 cases have been reported from the Khurda district, which includes the state capital of Bhubaneswar. Other districts continue to have fewer than 12 cases.

During the months of July and August, when the monsoon is active, there is always an increase in diseases such as malaria and dengue. He claims that the accumulation of rainwater and puddles provides a favorable environment for mosquito breeding.

According to the statistics he provided, the government has conducted 10,781 tests this year, compared to only 5,400 tests during the same period last year. Despite the increased number of tests, he claims that the rate of positive dengue cases has significantly decreased. Last year at this time, around 300 cases were identified as positive, but this year, the number has dropped to 175.

Dengue fever is caused by the aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in clean water accumulated on hard surfaces. Mishra has asked people to clean up any puddles or water accumulations in their surroundings, particularly around water coolers and tyres.

The Union government has directed that free dengue testing be provided at various government hospitals.

"As a precautionary measure, a standard operating procedure (SOP) has been issued for all districts." "Specific instructions have been issued to hospitals and medical colleges to keep beds, medicine, and platelets on hand in case of an emergency," Mishra added.
