Jharsuguda: Amit Sharma, one of the accused in the kidnapping-murder of minor boy Samarth Agarwal for Rs 50 lakh ransom, allegedly attempted suicide while in police custody in Odisha's Jharsuguda on Tuesday.

According to preliminary evidence, Sharma allegedly slit his wrist and other body parts with a piece of glass obtained by smashing a mirror in the reserve battalion's washroom.

The accused, who is now being held on a three-day police remand, was taken to the reserve battalion for questioning in connection with the kidnapping and murder of the Class X student, and today was the last day of his remand. Sharma was rescued and immediately taken to the hospital for treatment by police officers.

Police may have arrested two suspects, Amit Kumar Sharma of Jharsuguda and Dinesh Kumar Agarwal of Brajrajnagar, in connection with the kidnap and murder. On March 29, the two were apprehended based on CCTV footage near the deceased's apartment in Saharabahal.

Sharma persuaded Samarth to accompany him to Brajarajnagar, 15 kilometers away, to Dinesh's house. He was then seen riding pillion with the deceased. They dropped off the boy's scooter at Amit's house and drove to Bargarh.

Amit and Dinesh had made two ransom calls to Samarth's father, Sunit Agarwal, who owns a motor parts shop, the first on March 27 evening and the second on March 28 evening. Samarth's charred body was discovered on a river bank in Bargarh district on March 28 while they were preparing to pay the ransom.

Amit and Sunit lived in the same neighborhood until a few years ago, when the Agarwal family relocated to a new colony. Amit's daughter used to tie Rakhi to the deceased, and both attended the same school, according to sources.
