Bhubaneswar: Brijesh Kumar Rai, an Odisha Police DIG, ended up in hot water after a woman home guard lost her two legs in a suicide attempt after allegedly being tortured and humiliated by his wife.
Souridri Sahu of Angul district is being treated at a private hospital in Cuttack.
She accused Rai's wife of beating and humiliating her for neglecting household chores in a letter to Homeguard DG Sudhanshu Sarangi. On August 4, the victim claimed that she dragged her out of the house holding her neck and abused her after she expressed her inability to wash some clothes due to a leg injury.
The humiliation and repeated threats to fire her led her to end her life by jumping in front of a moving train.
"I was under severe mental stress when I heard these words. I made the decision to end my life and proceeded to the nearby railway tracks. I fell outside the tracks while standing on the tracks due to the vibration caused by an approaching train. My legs, however, were crushed beneath the train's wheel. "When I regained consciousness, I found myself in a hospital bed," she wrote.
While demanding Rs 5 lakh in compensation and a home guard job for her elder daughter, she also claimed that efforts were being made to silence her.
She has not filed a police report in this matter.
Rai, on the other hand, attributed the victim's extreme behavior to mental distress. "She was going through a lot of personal turmoil." She was frequently distracted while on duty, and she was concerned about her older daughter. She was also concerned about her health. She was also mourning the loss of her nephew. We even offered her another job if she was unhappy here," he told the press.
"She has never been mistreated by us. Someone may have influenced her decision to oppose us," he added.
However, Souridri's daughter Suchismita dismissed Rai's claims that her mother's suicide attempt was motivated by family issues. She told a local television station that her mother was upset because Rai's wife tortured her. She decided to end her life because she couldn't deal with the stress, Suchismita added.
Souridri, a widow, lives with her two daughters.
"The government will cover the costs of the woman's treatment." The allegations made by her will also be investigated. We will contact her after she is released from the hospital. Following that, the necessary action will be taken," said the Homeguard DG.
Rai, a 2009-batch IPS officer from Uttar Pradesh's Mau district, was promoted and transferred to Angul as DIG in December of last year.
