Puri: On Friday afternoon, just a few hours after the fire in Laxmi Market Complex at Marichikot Chhak on Grand Road in Odisha's Puri town was completely extinguished, another fire broke out in Niladri Market Complex. Laxmi Market Complex is just a few yards away from Niladri Market Complex.
According to sources, the fire started in a hand loom showroom in the market complex. Firefighters responded quickly after being notified, and the fire was brought under control within minutes.
A short circuit was suspected to be the cause of the fire.
Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh told reporters that it was a minor fire that was put out in minutes.
"It's not a big fire. Rumors should not be believed," he added.
Back-to-back fires in the holy city have called into question the fire safety measures in the shops, buildings, and market complexes.
Notably, after thoroughly inspecting all areas of the Laxmi Market complex, which is located 300 meters from Jagannath Temple, fire service personnel declared that the fire had been completely extinguished and that the building posed no danger. In the fire, 43 commercial establishments and a bank were reduced to ashes. Crores of rupees in assets were lost.
Meanwhile, the district administration has formed a committee to investigate the cause of the fire, which will be led by the Puri sub-collector. Its members will include the local tehsildar, the IIC, and senior fire service personnel.
Locals claimed that the Puri Konark Development Authority (PKDA) approved numerous building plans that did not meet mandatory fire safety and parking standards.
They have demanded that the town's fire safety measures be monitored on a regular basis.
