Agitating Lawyers Clash With Police In Sambalpur

Sambalpur: Tensions were high in Kacheri Chhak in Odisha's Sambalpur town on Wednesday when agitating attorneys battled with police while staging a demonstration demanding a permanent High Court bench.

According to sources, the incident occurred when police uprooted agitators' tents.

Meanwhile, numerous judges were unable to enter the courtroom due to the picketing lawyers, who also picketed at various government offices throughout the demand.

On November 28, the Supreme Court directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) to cancel the licenses of striking attorneys and instructed the administration to make preparations to prevent lawyers from blocking court operations.

This came after the lawyers opted to keep protesting despite a severe warning from the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court slammed the striking lawyers on November 14 and ordered them to return to work by November 16 after the Orissa High Court filed a petition claiming that 2,14,176 judicial working hours were lost due to the strikes between January 1, 2022, and September 30, 2022.

The lawyers were also cautioned that failure to comply would result in contempt proceedings, and the BCI would take action to suspend or cancel their licenses.
