Bhubaneswar: While heavy rains continue to pelt Odisha due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more intense rain spells with another low pressure system expected by September 17.

Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director-General of IMD, said on Monday that a cyclonic circulation is expected to emerge over the north Bay of Bengal on September 17. Within 24 hours, the system will transform into a low-pressure area and move west-northwest.

“The next morning, it is most likely to hit the north Odisha coast. Heavy rain will hammer the state from the afternoon of September 17 under its influence,” he stated.

However, according to Mohapatra, the rain intensity will be less than that caused by the low pressure on September 10.

The present system, which crossed the Odisha coast around Chandbali, is expected to continue into Chhattisgarh, according to the IMD DG. “While rainfall intensity would gradually decrease in coastal areas, it will increase in interior districts like as Sambalpur, Angul, Deogarh, Bargarh, and Boudh,” he added.

The deep depression was about 70 kilometres west-northwest of Chandbali and 90 kilometres east-southeast of Keonjhar around 11:30 a.m. The IMD said in its latest advisory that it is expected to move west-northwestwards across north interior Odisha, north Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh over the next 48 hours before weakening into a depression over the next 24 hours.

Until 8.30 a.m. Tuesday, a red rain warning has been issued for one or two locations in Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur, Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda, and Bargarh.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (orange warning) is also expected in Balangir, Sundargarh, Boudh, Keonjhar, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kendrapada, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Cuttack, according to the Met Office.

Heavy rain (yellow warning) is expected in isolated areas of Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam Nayagarh, and Mayurbhanj, according to the forecast.
