Bhadrak: For the second time in the state's panchayat elections on Friday, journalists were attacked by miscreants during polling.

According to sources, journalists from print and electronic media gathered in Haldia village under Gopinathpur panchayat of Chandbali block in the district for coverage as the second phase of polls was underway.

Some miscreants stopped their vehicle in front of booths 12 and 13 as they were about to head to the local polling station. The scribes were attacked when they exited the vans to question them.

The thugs assaulted a local daily's deputy editor as well as an electronic media reporter and cameraman. They also took their cellphones and video cameras from them in the sight of police.

Local villagers claimed they notified the media after workers from a political party took over the booths and started causing havoc.

The journalists later filed a police report about the incident at the Ghanteswar police station.

Journalists have urged a high-level investigation into the attack on media persons, which happened for the second time during the panchayat elections.

It should be remembered that four on-duty journalists were beaten by miscreants in Gadisagada panchayat of Puri district during the first phase poll on Wednesday. The journalists had gone there to report on the miscreants' takeover of voting booths during the election.

Police later detained eight people in connection with the incident.
