Night curfew lifted from all urban areas in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: With the state government agreeing to abolish the night curfew restrictions with a continuous drop in COVID cases, shops and eateries in Odisha's metropolitan districts will be open till 10 p.m. starting Friday.

"Night curfew is withdrawn/ removed from all metropolitan areas of the State with effect from 18th February 2022," the office of Special Relief Commissioner stated in a notification.

Since February 1, a night curfew has been in effect in metropolitan areas from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. In January, when Odisha saw a sharp increase in instances due to the third wave sweeping the state, the period of this limitation was increased by an hour.

This came on the heels of the Centre's direction to states to relax additional COVID restrictions. With India seeing a decline in new cases and active caseload, the Centre wrote to state and union territories on February 15 to examine and amend/do away with any unnecessary restrictions.

For the past four days, Odisha has reported less than 1000 new infections, with 7,855 active cases.

This move is viewed as a step toward reducing the impact on people's lives and livelihoods. Other limits imposed by the authorities for the month of February, however, will remain in effect, according to the statement.
