New Delhi, India: India is expected to begin immunising infants by September, according to AIIMS chief Dr. Randeep Guleria.

Vaccinating children, according to Guleria, will be a critical step towards breaking the transmission chain.

“I think Zydus has already done the trials and they’re waiting for the emergency authorisation. Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin trials should be over by August or September, and by that time we should get an approval. Pfizer vaccine has been already approved by US regulator FDA (Food and Drug Administration),” the health expert was quoted as saying by NDTV.

“Hopefully, by September, we should be able to start vaccinating youngsters, which will be a huge help in terms of breaking the transmission chain,” Guleria continued.

India has vaccinated roughly 6% of the population with over 42 crore doses of vaccinations so far. By the end of the year, the government hopes to have vaccinated all adults.
