Congress Workers Protest Police 'Brutality', SP Offices Gherao Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of Youth Congress activists and senior party leaders gheraoed SP offices across Odisha on Tuesday, demanding that police brutality be addressed.

On December 10, when party activists protesting the Mamita Meher murder case and seeking the dismissal of Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra were lathi-charged by the police, Congress workers gheraoed SP offices to protest "police brutality" in the state capital.

Many party activists were being treated for injuries to their heads, legs, and arms as a result of "police brutality," according to the Congress party. Inside the Congress Bhawan, the office of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), policemen with lathis chased the activists. The event was captured on film and went viral.

Party activists in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack staged a dharna in front of the DCP office on Tuesday.

Sura Routray, a senior Congressman, has called for a judicial investigation into the incident. "The situation should be thoroughly investigated, and the errant police officers should face severe consequences." Otherwise, the Congress's objections would escalate in the next days," he said.

The Congress also sent Governor Ganeshi Lal a memorandum demanding a SIT investigation into the Mamita Meher murder case, as well as the immediate dismissal of Divya Sankar Mishra and the filing of a FIR against him.

A judicial investigation into the "police invasion into Congress Bhawan" and the "barbaric attack on Congress workers in Bhubaneswar" was also demanded by the party. The Congress requested that Bhubaneswar's DCP be fired immediately.

The party said that the horrible execution of Mamita Meher revealed a tie between the police and ruling lawmakers, citing statistics on crimes against women in Odisha.

The Mahanga double murder case, in which state Law Minister Pratap Jena is facing charges, was also mentioned by the party.

Earlier, Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati said he would leave politics if Twin City Police Commissioner Soumendra Priyadarshi could present proof that Congress activists threw stones at police.

Bahinipati was responding to Priyadarshi's claims that during the altercation between party activists and police on Friday, Congress activists threw stones at officers. The cops, he argued, had thrown stones at the Congress Bhawan.
