Bhubaneswar: On the premise of performing in Dubai and Singapore, a lady choreographer allegedly defrauded a group of city-based dancers, including several minors.

On Friday, the misled performers went to the office of Commissioner of Police Saumendra Priyadarshi and urged that he take action against the choreographer.

“In January and February of this year, we paid roughly Rs 3.4 lakh to Sephalika Mohanty, a dance choreographer. She promised to fly us to Dubai and Singapore, where we were to perform modern dance with a group of twenty-one people, including some children. But she broke her commitment and misled us,” media quoted duped dancing teacher Amit Kumar Patro as saying.

The dancers were asked to perform in Dubai and Singapore on April 1 and 3, respectively, according to Patro. On March 28, the dancers were expected to leave.

“We were all quite enthusiastic for our first international performance, especially the kids. We had put in a lot of effort in practise. But we never anticipated her to deceive us,” claimed another dancer who did not want to be identified.

The artists demanded a refund after the incident, but Mohanty allegedly made them wait months. On June 5, a complaint was filed against her at the Laxmisagar police station.

Despite filing a cheating case, the victims claim that police have yet to take action against her.
