Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly had to be adjourned twice on Friday (from 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and then until 4 p.m.) as the BJP and Congress MLAs pressed for Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra's removal from the Council of Ministers over alleged ties to Govind Sahu, the prime suspect in the sensational Mamita Meher murder.

Some BJP legislators were seen sprinkling Gangajal and cow-dung water on the state Assembly grounds, claiming that the minister's entry had desecrated the building.

"The House had grown impious in the last two days due to the minister's attendance throughout the proceedings," said Opposition whip Mohan Majhi.

He went on to say that the BJP has asked for two things in the House: the minister's dismissal from the Cabinet and a CBI investigation into the Mamita Meher murder case. "However, Speaker delayed the House proceedings when we highlighted the problems during Question Hour." CM Naveen is also protecting Mishra. He added, "We will continue our agitation until our demands are met."

Following a request from the state government, the Orissa High Court selected former district judge ABS Naidu to monitor the inquiry in the matter a day before the winter session of the assembly began.

While the action was perceived as an attempt by the administration to quell opposition demands for Mishra's resignation, the session got off to a bumpy start, with Congress MLAs staging a dharna at the House entrance gates to block Mishra from entering.

The legislators demanded an answer from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the subject, shouting chants and brandishing placards that read "Go back MoS (Home)" and "Give Justice to Mamita Meher."

Taraprasad Bahinipati, a Congress MLA, stated that the protests will continue till the minister is removed from the Council of Ministers and arrested. "Congress opposes the BJD's attempt to stifle debate in the House," he continued.
