Govt clarifies on fee exemption of Odia Hons UG students

Bhubaneswar: With the exception of dormitory fees, the Odisha government has made it plain that Plus III students choosing to study Odia as a core subject in its-run colleges will not be charged any fees.

The Higher Education Department stated in a directive to principals of all government degree colleges and autonomous colleges that no fees other than the dormitory fees will be collected from any undergraduate student pursuing Odia as an honours.

The clarification, according to reports, follows representations from numerous colleges. Several schools made the point that by waiving costs for students who speak Odia, they are having trouble paying examination fees, as well as certificate and mark sheet payments, to the Controller of Examinations of the universities to which they are attached.

In its directive, the agency made it clear that any such costs must be covered by the colleges out of their own college development or examination money.

To promote the language, the state government decided to waive all expenses for Odia honours students beginning with the 2018–19 academic year, with the exception of housing fees.

The higher education department had sent a letter to the principals of the government colleges asking them not to charge fees other than hostel fees from students studying Odia as honours subjects in Plus III level following approval in the Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

The state cabinet made a number of important decisions in December 2017 to advance the Odia language, including holding an international conference on the language every five years.
