Puri: The miscreants raided yet another temple late Friday night, while authorities remained mystified about a rash of idol thefts in the district.

This time, the Gopinath temple in Birnarasinghpur village, Puri Sadar block's Chandanpur police limits, has been looted. The temple has had up to five idols constructed of 'Astadhatu' (eight precious metals) stolen.

The thieves also stole valuable gold and silver jewellery from the deities revered in the temple's sanctum sanctorum.

The incident was discovered after the temple's priests opened it early in the morning to perform rituals. They informed the townspeople, who then informed the cops.

Police have arrived in the village and begun an investigation. Despite suspicions that a group of robbers was involved, the authorities were unable to prove their identity.

On Tuesday, three idols were taken from the 500-year-old Isaneswara temple in Srimukundapur, which is located inside the Gadisagoda police boundaries of Kanas block. According to the sources, at least six temples in the district had been stolen in the last two months.

On March 8, police claimed to have discovered ten stolen Astadhatu idols in the possession of Prafulla Mishra, who was attempting to sell them.
