Muktikant safely rescued from atop hoarding after 5-hour operation by fire personnel
Bhubaneswar: Muktikanta Biswal of Rourkela, who climbed atop an advertisement hoarding at Odisha's capital's Sishu Bhawan Square to remind Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of unmet promises, was rescued by Fire Services officials on Wednesday.
According to accounts, the fire department used a ladder to rescue Muktikanta after 4.5 hours of work. Though police and firefighters had previously attempted to persuade him to come down from the hoarding, their efforts had been futile.
The activist was immediately transferred to Unit-6 of Capital Hospital for a medical evaluation.
After being rescued, Muktikanta stated that he will make every effort to see that the Chief Minister's pledges are kept. "The fight will go on," he declared.
"I have come here to fight for the people of Rourkela and Sundergarh," he continued. I shall go on a death-defying fast if I am arrested and imprisoned today."
After arriving in the state capital from Rourkela on December 14, Biswal set up a dharna near Sishu Bhawan Square. He also brought two tableaux with models of the projects, which included a second bridge across the Brahmani River and the upgrade of IGH to a super specialty hospital, which Naveen had promised to pursue with the Centre when Biswal met him in 2018.
On April 1, 2015, the Prime Minister announced both initiatives.
Other pledges include the development of a Ring Road along the canal, upgrading Rourkela's district hospital to Capital Hospital with 400 beds and a ventilator facility, and constructing a number of cold storage facilities in the villages surrounding the steel city.
Muktikant stated that the foundation stones for these projects were laid about a decade ago, but there has been no work since.
