Kendrapada: On Wednesday about 9 a.m., a speeding pickup van drove over a home guard member near Balabhadrapur in Odisha's Kendrapada district.
Prabir Kumar Mohapatra was recognized as the deceased.
According to sources, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the Enforcement Squad were conducting a joint inspection for traffic rule infractions on the National Highway near Balabhadrapur.
While Mohapatra was attempting to halt a speeding scrap-laden van, the driver failed to stop and drove over the home guard, killing him on the spot.
Other members of the team pursued the van. The driver, on the other hand, fled after abandoning the vehicle in a nearby settlement. The squad seized the van and took it to the local police station.
Meanwhile, enraged residents organized a roadblock by laying the body on the road, demanding recompense for the mourning family. They further claimed that if RTO authorities had promptly brought Mohapatra to a nearby hospital following the accident, he would have been rescued.
After being notified, a Derabish police squad arrived on the scene and attempted to appease the villagers. Efforts are being made to track down and apprehend the erring driver.
