Odisha Fake Doctor’s Sister Arrested

Bhubaneswar: Rashmita Beura, the sister of Odisha's 'Don Juan' Ramesh Swain, was detained by the Commissionerate Police on Wednesday.

"His sister is complicit in practically all of his criminal operations. "Their video conference call yielded evidence," claimed Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash.

Police discovered Rashmita was present at the weddings via interactions with some of the ladies with whom he had cheated, he added, adding that her husband is still at large.

According to the DCP, the farmhouse in Khamar Nuagaon in the Khuntuni district of Athagarh, which was searched this morning, was registered in Swain's second wife's name. The raid came after his sister was brought to Bhubaneswar for questioning on Tuesday, with suspicions that she was involved in her brother's scam.

Swain reportedly planted plants and trees costing Rs 4.5 lakh that he purchased from an Andhra Pradesh businessman on the farmhouse's 15-acre property. According to the DCP, a businessman from East Godavari filed a complaint with the police on Tuesday, stating that Swain defrauded him of Rs 4.5 lakh by issuing a fraudulent check.

He stated that he had provided another forged cheque for Rs 65,000 to the truck driver who had delivered the seedlings to Bhubaneswar.

Police questioned his mother Gauri Swain and brother Umesh at Derabis, Dhenkanal district, under the Hindol panchayat. During interrogation, authorities discovered a secret room just a few metres away from the residence in Bhagabanpur. His mother and brother, on the other hand, denied any involvement in his several marriages.

Swain also owned a chicken farm where he hid several pricey machinery. According to cops, the machines were moved from Kolkata after blank cheques were provided.

On Sunday, a West Bengal businessman filed a complaint with Mahila Police stating that Swain had seized a hatching machine worth Rs 1 lakh from him but had not paid for it.

While Swain's five-day detention expired on Wednesday, the DCP announced that he would be remanded for another seven days to examine him about new claims. A man from Jharsuguda claims that he collected Rs 18 lakh from him in order to help him get into AIIMS.

Swain was detained on February 14 for allegedly duping 14 ladies into marriage using matchmaking websites and swindling their money by acting as a government doctor.
