Odisha Woman launches campaign for paid period leave on Menstrual Hygiene Day
Sambalpur: Ranjeeta Priyadarshini of Odisha's Sambalpur district has started an online campaign to persuade Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupender Yadav to grant paid leave to all women employees of government and private companies during periods.
The ad is timed to coincide with World Menstrual Hygiene Day, which takes place on Saturday. On Wednesday, she officially launched her campaign.
"In India, women make up nearly a third of the workforce. Working while menstruation causes a lot of discomfort, which is underreported. "Women employees suffer during their periods at work since they are unable to take time off due to a lack of access to suitable bathrooms and restrooms," she told a news portal.
"I created the 'SIGN my petition' internet campaign, requesting the United Nations Labour Ministry to enact a no-questions-asked, paid monthly period break for all women workers in the country," she stated.
"If broadly adopted, menstruating women, transgenders, and non-binary workers will receive direct access to rest when they need it most, be happier and more productive at work as a result, and find it easier to stay in the workforce." "Requesting a period absence should not be associated with guilt or stigma," she stated.
Ranjeeta is a member of the heavy metal industry.
