Odisha crime branch takes over probe into mysterious death of Russian lawmaker, his friend

Bhubaneswar: On Wednesday, the Crime Branch of the Odisha Police questioned numerous people and planned to deploy a special team to Rayagada, where the occurrences occurred last week.

According to sources, the Crime Branch, which initiated a probe into the death case following DGP Sunil Kumar Bansal's directive on Tuesday, would send a team to Rayagada to investigate the guesthouse where the dead and two other Russian co-travellers slept.

While Antov (65) was discovered in a pool of blood outside the hotel building on December 24, his companion Vladimir Bidenov (62) was discovered dead in a hotel room on December 22.

Apart from inspecting the incident locations in Rayagada, Crime Branch investigators are likely to question hotel personnel and others.

The CB investigators also questioned Russian tourists Pansasenko Natalia (44) and Turov Mikhail (64), who had accompanied the deceased after they were brought from Rayagada. They were told to stay put and help with the inquiry.

The two Russians and tour guide Jitendra Singh were brought to Bhubaneswar before being transferred to the CID-Crime Branch headquarters in Cuttack on Wednesday under tight security for further questioning.

Senior CB officials questioned the Russians as part of their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. According to sources, they were also questioned about the cause for their journey to Rayagada, and more interrogation of the two Russians and the tour guide is probable.

Meanwhile, postmortem reports revealed that Bidenov died of a heart attack, whereas Antov perished by accident. Antov apparently suffered a major inside injury after falling from the hotel's third storey.
