Bhubaneswar: Nanda Master, also known as Padma Shri Nanda Prusty, has tested positive with COVID-19. On Monday, a 102-year-old teacher from Kantira village in Jajpur was admitted to the Jajpur district headquarters hospital after complaining of severe chest pain.

"For the previous month, he had been suffering from a fever and cough. "He was transferred to Sukinda CHC, where doctors recommended him to Jajpur," said Dr. Prabhas Ranjan Panda, a medicine specialist.

Nanda Master's condition deteriorated, according to his grandson, Khageswara Prusty, when two men attacked his father over a land dispute on Sunday evening. "He stopped eating and stayed awake the entire night." On Monday morning, he collapsed and was transported to Sukinda Hospital. "The physicians in that city requested that we transfer him to Jaipur," he added.

On November 9, Nanda Master was awarded the Padma Shri. A photo of a barefoot teacher congratulating President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhawan investiture ceremony went viral.

Nanda Master was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions to education over a lengthy period of time. He may be the last one to maintain the 'chatashali' (a non-formal primary school in Odisha) tradition alive.
