Two Maoists killed after gunfight with security forces in Kandhamal

Bhubaneswar: On Tuesday, two female Maoists were killed in an exchange of fire with security personnel inside a forest in Odisha's Kandhamal district, according to Director General of Police (DGP) Sunil Kumar Bansal.

Acting on intelligence about the presence of naxals in the area, members of the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) and district police conducted an operation in Kandhamal's Matakupa Reserve Forest area, which borders Boudh district, he added.

When Maoists opened fire on security forces, SOG and DVF personnel replied in self-defense, sparking a furious gun war. During the exchange of fire, two red insurgents were killed.

The bodies of two female cadres of the banned CPI (Maoist) in uniform were later discovered from the site during a search operation, according to the DGP, who described the operation as highly effective.

Apart from that, four firearms, including one INSAS rifle with 11 rounds of ammo, and one Improvised Explosive Device (IED) were discovered during a search of the area.

While the bodies are being identified, additional searches are being conducted in the vicinity. The combing effort has been stepped up, and more teams have been deployed, according to Bansal.

The DGP urged the Maoists to abandon violence and join the social mainstream, saying that misguided naxals should recognize the futility of violence and participate in the development process in order to live a decent life.

It should be noted that on November 24, two female Maoists carrying cash awards of Rs 4 lakh each were gunned down in an exchange of fire with a police SOG in the Gandhamardhan hills of Balangir district.
