Balangir: A wild elephant killed an old farmer near Khairguda village of Kultapada Panchayat under Tusura police station in Odisha's Balangir district.

Machhu Mahananda (64) of Khairguda village has been recognized as the deceased.

According to accounts, a herd of ten elephants has recently been roaming through the area. On Monday night, the deceased was guarding his paddy field and drumming a local musical instrument to keep the jumbos at bay.

However, the elephants suddenly emerged, and one of the wild creatures attacked the farmer, killing him on the spot.

After receiving information, forest personnel hurried to the scene to assess the situation. According to the laws, Rs 10,000 was handed to the grieving family as instant compensation, according to Balangir Forest Range officer Keshab Kishore Nayak.

Balangir DFO Nitish Kumar described the incident as unfortunate and asked that people not interfere with the movement of elephants. According to the law, adequate compensation will be provided for property or crop damage. He stated that the forest department is working around the clock to prevent similar incidents.

According to official sources, 18 people have died in the district as a result of elephant attacks during 2009-10.
