Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police have apprehended an all-female inter-state robbery ring that allegedly stole valuables from shopping malls in Odisha's capital.
Labuni Samandar (34), Sukla Banik (30), Manjari Chakraborty (32), Amrita Roy (40), Baisakhi Mirdha (23), Putul Dev Mohanty (35), Malaty Das (34), Rupa Mirdha (32) and Mousumi Dutta (31) have been identified as members arrested by Nayapalli police.
According to police sources, the gang members stayed at rented lodges in Bhubaneswar and other parts of the state during Rath Yatra and other festivals. They stole items such as cosmetics and other items by tucking them inside their sarees. The women also chose large electronic devices and sold them at much lower prices outside.
The gang attacked a shopping mall in Nayapalli two days ago, and seven of its members were apprehended by police, who then conducted an investigation and apprehended two more. Consumer goods, cosmetics, food items, and other products were seized from the Reliance Smart Bazaar outlet in Krishna Plaza Mall.
"The arrested are related and from the same village." They primarily target shopping malls and steal expensive cosmetics and health drinks. They hid them in the petticoat-made bags. We seized products worth Rs 2 lakh that they stole," said ACP Sanjeev Satpathy.
A police team will travel to West Bengal because some of the gang's members have fled with stolen goods, and they will also investigate the criminal histories of those arrested, he said.
