Bhubaneswar: Sanjeeb Kumar Sahoo, a former minister and four-time MLA, resigned from the BJD on Wednesday.

Sahoo stated personal reasons for leaving the BJD in his resignation letter to BJD president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

The 61-year-old politician was elected MLA four times as a BJD candidate. In a bypoll in 2003, he was first elected from Birmaharajpur. In 2004, he was elected to the Assembly from the same constituency. From May 2005 to February 2008, he served as the Minister of Panchayati Raj.

Sahoo was elected from the Athamallik constituency in the 2009 and 2014 general elections. However, Sahoo was denied a BJD ticket for the 2019 elections, and the party instead selected former bureaucrat Ramesh Sai for the Athamallik seat.

Sahoo is expected to join the BJP, according to individuals close to him.
