Balasore: In a major crackdown, Forest Department officials rescued 26 cobras and arrested three people, including a woman, for their alleged involvement in the illegal trade of venomous snakes in the Panchupali area of Odisha's Balasore district on Wednesday.

According to sources, the alleged inter-state racket was run by a couple who were apprehended following a raid on their house by officials from the Balasore forest division and Snake Helpline.

According to preliminary investigations, the reptiles were collected from various parts of the state and smuggled out of the state after their venom was extracted. "We received a reliable tip about cobra smuggling and immediately left Bhubaneswar around 3 a.m.," Snake Helpline secretary Suvendu Mallick told a press conference.

They arrived in Balasore at 5 a.m. and conducted the raid alongside forest officials. "We rescued 26 cobras kept in specially designed plastic containers with holes." "We suspect more people are involved in his racket," he added.

According to Balasore Forest Division ACF Sovan Chand, an investigation is underway to determine the involvement of others in the racket.
