Jagatsinghpur: On Wednesday, an undertrial prisoner who escaped from jail last year allegedly killed his grandmother and injured two others by attacking them with a sharp weapon in a village in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district's Balikuda area.

According to reports, the incident occurred in Gadeigiri village, which is under the jurisdiction of the Balikuda police station. Sakhilata Sahu was identified as the deceased. According to sources, two other women who were injured in the attack have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

The accused, identified as Jeevan Jyoti Sahu, has been arrested.

According to preliminary reports, Jeevan went to his grandmother's house and launched an attack with a sharp weapon. While his grandmother died on the spot, two other people were severely injured in the attack.

Jeevan, who had been arrested in connection with a criminal case, escaped from jail in 2022 and had been on the run since then until he unexpectedly appeared in the area.

While the exact reason for the attack has yet to be determined, it is suspected that the incident was motivated by a love affair.

According to villagers, the accused committed the crime because his family was opposed to his inter-caste marriage. Police have launched an investigation, and more information is awaited.
