Sambalpur: On Thursday, the Hirakud dam in Sambalpur, Odisha, opened 12 more sluice gates to remove excess water from the reservoir. This allows surplus water to be evacuated through the dam's 14 sluice gates.

After opening two sluice gates yesterday evening, authorities unlocked eight more this morning. According to accounts, four more gates were opened as the reservoir's water level climbed.

The dam's 14 sluice gates are now open to drain the surplus water accumulated in the reservoir as a result of excessive rain in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi river. The authorities have opened nine gates on the dam's left side and five on the dam's right side.

The reservoir in Hirakud had a water level of 628.69 feet, compared to its capacity of 630 feet. According to sources, the average intake of reservoir water is roughly 1,49,167 cusec, while the outflow is 2,02,769 cusec. The spillway's outflow of rainfall is 1,63,410 cusec, while the power channel's is 35,455 cusec.

Heavy rain has lashed the higher catchment areas of the Mahanadi River as a result of a low pressure system that has formed over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the sources, if the flow of water into the reservoir grows further, more sluice gates can be opened if necessary, and the Hirakud dam managers are continually watching the situation.
