Bhubaneswar: Another honey trap case has emerged from the Defence Research and Development Organization's high-security Interim Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha's Balasore district, with the arrest on Friday of an officer for allegedly passing sensitive defense information to a Pakistani agent.

Identifying the accused, Himanshu Lal, IG Police, Eastern Range, informed that a case had been registered against him at Chandipur police station under Sections 120-A, 120-B, and 31 of the IPC, as well as Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, based on a written report by sub-inspector Chandra Sekhar Mohanty.

"Through WhatsApp conversation and exchange of sexual images and videos, the officer of the ITR transmitted/shared the secrets of sensitive defense information regarding missile tests to a Pakistani agent for sexual as well as monetary gratification," Lal said during the press conference, which was also attended by Balasore SP Sagarika Nath.

For over a year, the officer communicated with the agent, who was based in Rawalpindi. He also stated that a cellphone had been taken from him.

Further investigation is being conducted to determine the involvement of others in the case.

Five ITR contract workers were arrested in September last year on suspicion of spying for a foreign intelligence agency, suspected to be Pakistan's notorious ISI. On February 11, that year, an additional district judge's court in Balasore sentenced Ishwar Behera, a former contractual cameraperson with ITR, to life imprisonment on charges of spying for ISI.
