Bhubaneswar: On Thursday morning, a man died and his wife is in critical condition after being bitten by a poisonous snake in Odisha's Kandhamal district's Chakapada area.

Bimala Kanhar of Panduli village, Linepada police outpost, has been identified as the deceased. Satyabhama, his wife, is being treated at the Phulbani district headquarters hospital.

According to sources, the incident occurred while they were sleeping in their home and the power was out due to heavy rain. They were rushed in critical condition to Khajuripada Community Health Centre. Bimal died in the hospital while receiving treatment. Satyabhama was then transferred to Phulbani as her condition worsened.

Similarly, in the last 24 hours, 25 people were allegedly beaten by poisonous snakes in the Soro area of the Balasore district.

Notably, for the last five years, Odisha has seen 1,000 snakebite deaths per year. Snakebite incidents have claimed at least 34 lives this year, including three children in Keonjhar.

On July 25, the state government issued an advisory directing all chief district medical officers (CDMOs) and public health officers (PHOs) to take adequate precautions, including stockpiling anti-snake venom (ASV) at district headquarters hospitals and other tertiary healthcare facilities. It also stated that a grassroots sensitization drive will be carried out for the Health Department's field staff, emphasizing the importance of first-aid and early hospitalization of snakebite victims.
