Bhubaneswar: The Unit-II Market Building in Bhubaneswar reopened on Thursday after being closed for more than a fortnight, to the delight of traders and shoppers alike.
Though the conflict between the Central Market Building Traders' Association and the street vendors has not been resolved, the reopening of the market complex has provided people with much-needed relief.
While the market complex has reopened, some major showrooms have yet to reopen their doors. They claim that the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has yet to give the Central Market Building Association (CMBA) assurances on their demand to evict street vendors from the premises.
The popular shopping destination Unit-II Market Building had been closed since July 17 due to a protest by shopkeepers demanding the eviction of the makeshift vendors from the premises.
According to sources, a meeting between representatives of the Market Building Association and BMC officials is being held this evening in an attempt to break the stalemate.
The shopkeepers have been claiming encroachment by the makeshift vendors and demanding their eviction from the complex under the banner of the Market Building Association. The association had urged the BMC to evict the vendors, claiming that they had ruined the atmosphere in the complex.
The shopkeepers shut down the market building indefinitely, accusing the BMC of failing to act on their demand.
The street vendors, for their part, have staged protests demanding that they be allowed to remain on the Market Building grounds. Around 200 vendors operate their businesses in and around the market building complex in Unit-II, sources said.
