Berhampur: From January 13 to January 17, all sea beaches in Odisha's Ganjam district, including Gopalpur and Sonapur, as well as other major water bodies, would be closed to the public.

The decision was made to avoid big crowds during forthcoming events and to conform to COVID-19 standards to the letter.

To avoid the spread of the virus, the Special Relief Commissioner told all collectors on Wednesday to restrict crowds at water bodies for the observance or celebration of impending local festivals or festivities.

The Ganjam administration had previously announced that religious places in the district will be closed until January 31. Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange explained that the decision was made to avoid crowding at sacred sites.

There are presently 417 active cases in Ganjam.

However, health experts are concerned that the COVID scenario could worsen with the return of migrants from the worst-affected Gujarat and Maharashtra for the state's upcoming 3-tier panchayat polls. After the statewide lockdown was announced, migrant labourers returned in huge numbers, turning the district into a COVID hotspot.

In quest of work, approximately 7 to 8 lakh individuals from Ganjam have relocated to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
