Balasore: On Friday, an MBBS student at Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital (FMMCH) in Odisha's Balasore district was discovered dead on the hostel grounds under mysterious circumstances.

While it was suspected that the student, Hiteshnu Das, jumped off the rooftop of his hostel late Thursday night, the exact circumstances surrounding his death had yet to be determined. It wasn't immediately clear whether he jumped from the roof or fell.

According to sources, Hiteshnu, a third-year MBBS student, and some of his friends returned to the hostel late at night after seeing a movie in town.

Hiteshnu then allegedly jumped off the rooftop after sending a text message to his father from his cell phone.
According to FMMCH officials, who cited his parents, Hiteshnu was under mental stress, but the reason for the stress was not revealed.

Hiteshnu's father, Chadrakant Das, a resident of Bhimpur in Balasore, claimed that his son was upset because he did not receive a scholarship. "Hiteshnu was telling the dean of the medical college that he was harassing students about scholarship awards," he said.

Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the incident and have ordered a postmortem on the body.
