Cuttack: In the midst of the Congress' struggle to survive in Odisha after being relegated to third place following the 2019 Assembly elections, Barabati-Cuttack MLA Mohammed Moquim blamed the situation on a leadership crisis in the party following Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, Basant Biswal, and Hemananda Biswal.

"The party has failed to project a popular face after these leaders. "The current leadership needs to wake up to this crisis," he told reporters.

Moquim stated that he was very much in Congress and emphasized the importance of working together to strengthen the party in the state. "The party's senior leadership should reach out to the electorate while there is still time. However, the effort to get it back on track has yet to begin, and the leadership should "wake up to the situation and understand the issues before it is too late," he said.

The legislator stated that there was only a limited amount of time to fix things and move forward through a collaborative and concerted effort. "In the 147-member Odisha Assembly, Congress has only nine MLAs. The party also failed to make an impact in the byelections. As a result, there is a need to accept this harsh reality and work to build the party," he said.

He also stated that a strategy for the party's revival must be developed and urged leaders and workers to move to the field rather than sitting in the party headquarters in Bhubaneswar.

In response to OPPC president Sarat Pattanayak's nine-to-ninety target for the 2024 Assembly elections, Moquim stated that while some thought must have gone into this calculation, there is no denying that the party will have to work extremely hard to achieve this number. "It is not an impossible or difficult task, but we must strengthen the party at the organizational level and reach out to the people," he asserted.

In response to Moquim, senior leader and former PCC president Niranjan Patnaik stated that given the party's current situation in the country, it is unlikely that Congress will form government in 2024.
