SC Collegium recommends appointment of Justice Subhasis Talapatra as CJ of Orissa HC

Bhubaneswar: Justice Subhasis Talapatra is expected to be the next Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, with the Supreme Court collegium endorsing his candidacy.
Justice Talapatra was appointed to the Gauhati High Court on November 15, 2011, and when a separate High Court for Tripura was established in 2013, he chose the Tripura High Court as his parent High Court. He has been serving in the High Court of Orissa on transfer since June 10, 2022.
According to sources, a vacancy in the office of Chief Justice of the High Court of Orissa will occur in August 2023 as a result of the retirement of Dr Justice S Muralidhar. As a result, an appointment with that office is required.
The Collegium also recommended Chief Justices for six other High Courts: Kerala, Manipur, Andhra Pradesh, Bombay, Telangana, and Gujarat.
“It is proposed to recommend the name of Mr Justice Subhasis Talapatra, the senior-most Judge from the Tripura High Court, for appointment as Chief Justice of the High Court of Orissa. He was elevated as a Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 15 November 2011 and on establishment of a separate High Court for the State of Tripura in 2013, he opted the High Court of Tripura as his parent High Court. He has been functioning, on transfer, in the High Court of Orissa since 10 June 2022. He has acquired considerable experience of dispensing justice in two High Courts,” the collegium reportedly said.
The Collegium considered his name in light of the fact that the High Court of Tripura has not had representation among the Chief Justices of the High Courts since its inception in 2013. "Having considered all relevant factors," the Collegium concluded, "Mr Justice Subhasis Talapatra is fit and suitable in all respects for appointment as Chief Justice of the High Court of Orissa."
Justice Subhasis Talapatra was born in Udaipur, Tripura, on October 4, 1961.
