Bhubaneswar: Tensions rose at the Unit II Market Building in Bhubaneswar on Monday as shopkeepers protested an eviction drive launched in the area.

The eviction drive was launched jointly by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) enforcement squads and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA).

During the drive, additional police personnel were deployed to ensure a smooth eviction operation.

However, according to sources, the eviction drive was eventually halted due to commotion in the area and strong opposition from shopkeepers who staged a protest.

The shopkeepers also claimed that some BMC enforcement officers misbehaved with some vendors and demanded immediate action against them.

The shopkeepers objected to the drive, claiming that they were being evicted without any means of rehabilitation.

When the enforcement team began demolishing makeshift structures in front of the Keshari Mall in the Market Building area, they reacted angrily. The vendors claimed that they had not been given advance notice of the relocation.

They demanded that immediate steps be taken to rehabilitate the shopkeepers before any demolition work in the area could begin.
