Bhubaneswar: For the next few days, Odisha is likely to experience severe heatwave conditions caused by a tropical cyclone that formed over the Bay of Bengal.
The day temperature is expected to rise by 2 to 3°C over the next 24 hours due to dry westerly/northwesterly winds and high solar insolation, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). "As a result, heatwave conditions are likely in some districts of interior Odisha beginning May 15, with maximum temperatures exceeding 40°C and remaining 3 to 5°C above normal in a few places," it said.
People have been advised to take precautions when going outside during the day between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The MeT office predicts that the temperature will reach 45 degrees Celsius in Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh during the day. On May 16, the state's 45-degree-Celsius temperature may rise to nine - Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Titlagrah, Balangir, Sonepur, Sundargarh, Boudh, and Angul - with the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack at 40 degrees Celsius each.
On May 17, temperatures are expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius in six cities: Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Titlagrah, Balangir, Boudh, and Sonepur. The temperature will then fall slightly, according to the report.
According to weather experts, Odisha was engulfed in a heatwave as Cyclone Mocha curved away from the eastern seaboard, enhancing the flow of warm and dry westerly winds towards the state.
