Two pangolins rescued in Sonepur; 2 brothers nabbed

During a raid in Odisha's Sonepur district, the Odisha Police Special Task Force (STF) apprehended two people and rescued two live pangolins from them.

Bhubaneswar: During a raid in Odisha's Sonepur district, the Odisha Police Special Task Force (STF) apprehended two people and rescued two live pangolins from them.

Bedabyasa Dharua (41) and Nabadeep Dharua (29) of Jhankarpali village, Lachhipur police limits, have been identified as the accused.

According to sources, they were apprehended on Tuesday during a joint raid with Sonepur forest division officials between Nachhipura and Sonepur main road. Pangolins weighing 7 kg and 3 kg, respectively, were recovered, along with other incriminating materials. STF apprehended them and later handed them over to Sonepur forest officials. The live pangolins were also turned over to the DFO in Sonepur for safekeeping.

Pangolin is a Schedule I protected animal under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which provides absolute protection and offences under these are prescribed for the highest penalties.
