Bhubaneswar: A youth has been arrested for allegedly defrauding several job seekers in Bhubaneswar out of Rs 25 lakh by promising them employment.
According to reports, the youth, identified as Debabrata Palai of Krushnapur village in Mayurbhanj district's Rairangpur block, had opened a consultancy firm near Hanspal in Bhubaneswar.
He used to take large sums of money from unemployed youths by promising them jobs in various government and private institutions. While he took Rs 13 lakh from three people, a girl gave Rs 50,000 for a job in a hospital. However, he failed to provide them with employment.
One such Angul youth had paid Rs 3.5 lakh to Palai for his selection in an examination for the position of police constable. However, he did not pass the examination. When his father, Raj Kishore Pradhan, confronted Palai and demanded that he return the money, the latter refused and delayed in doing so.
Pradhan filed a complaint at the Mancheswar police station after suspecting his son had been cheated. During the course of the investigation, the police learned about other youths who Palai had duped.
Palai had fled to his village after learning about the police case. However, police were able to track him down and apprehend him in his village of Mayurbhanj. They are looking into the involvement of others in the incident.
