Jagatsinghpur: A young man arrested in a theft case was allegedly tortured in police custody in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district's Sadar block.

Rashmi Ranjan Mallick of Taradapada village revealed his ordeal to members of the media on Sunday.

The youth was apprehended by police at midnight on March 4 in connection with a theft case. Following that, he was tortured physically and mentally in the cell for three days. According to sources, his family members, along with scores of villagers, later staged a sit-in protest in front of the police station, demanding his immediate release.

The police, succumbing to public pressure, released him.

Rashmi claimed that two sub-inspectors and a constable brutally thrashed him in the lock up, despite the fact that he was not involved in the theft case.

Local residents and his family members have demanded that the police officers be punished severely. His family members also stated that they had written to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the DGP, the SP, and the SDPO about this.

However, police have refused to comment on the matter.
