Bhubaneswar: On Tuesday, a gas leak in the blast furnace of Tata Steel's Meramandali plant in Odisha's Dhenkanal district injured at least 19 people. They were taken to a private hospital in Cuttack.
The mishap occurred after a steam pipe burst due to gas leakage, according to sources. Hot water fell on labourers and engineers inspecting the blast furnace, injuring them. Two people are said to be in critical condition.
"Around 19 people were injured when a hot water valve was opened," Dhenkanal SP Gyanaranjan Mohapatra told the media, adding that a district administration team would also visit the scene for an investigation.
Tata Steel said in a statement that an accident occurred during an inspection at the Tata Steel Meramandali blast furnace power plant in Dhenkanal, Odisha, around 1 p.m., resulting in burn injuries to 19 people. "We are saddened to report an accident at the BFPP2 power plant at Tata Steel Meramandali Works in Dhenkanal, Odisha, caused by steam escape." The accident occurred today at 1 p.m. during the course of inspection work and affected a few people working at the site, who were immediately shifted to the Occupational Health Centre inside the plant premises and then to Cuttack for further treatment as a precautionary measure, in the Company's ambulance, accompanied by a doctor and paramedics."
"All emergency protocol services were activated following the accident, and the area was cordoned off." The Company is providing all necessary information and support to the affected personnel's families.
