Bhubaneswar: Police arrested two people and seized over 3 kg of ivory from them near Bhubaneswar's Sainik School Square.

Police identified the suspects as Girish Kumar Nayak and Deepak Sahu, both of Kandhamal district.

Acting on a tip-off about illegal wildlife smuggling, Maitri Vihar police conducted a patrol near Sainik School square on Sunday and apprehended the duo while they were transporting the tusk on a moped.

Three mobile phones and Rs 160 in cash were also taken from their possession, according to police.

The two defendants were later handed over to a forest ranger for further action under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

It should be noted that elephant deaths in Odisha have increased dramatically in recent years.

In January, four poachers were apprehended in connection with the killing of an elephant in the Talabandha wildlife range of Similipal National Park in the Mayurbhanj district. The elephant had been killed and its tusks had been stolen by poachers.
