Kendrapada: Odisha's forest personnel apprehended 32 fishermen for trespassing into the forbidden Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, which is off-limits to fishers.

Fishing is prohibited throughout the whole Odisha coast from November to May each year due of Olive Ridley turtle hatching. All year, fishing is prohibited in the marine sanctuary region.

According to sources on Thursday, the patrolling unit captured two fishing vessels containing more than ten quintals of fish, fishing nets, and GPS devices during a special operation.

The arrested fisherman come from villages in the state's districts of Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Jagatsinghpur.

They were apprehended in accordance with the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and the Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act of 1982.

The marine sanctuary area stays closed to sea fishing all year, and along the Odisha coast from November to May each year due to the yearly mass hatching of the endangered Olive Ridley turtles at Gahirmatha.
