Jajpur: On Friday, police in Odisha's Jajpur district detained six criminals in connection with a string of theft incidents and recovered an ATM from a water body near a laterite stone mining location.
The six were apprehended by a squad made up of three IICs from the district after searches were conducted at several Jajpur sites.
The individuals detained allegedly stole Rs 5,67,500 in cash from an SBI ATM at Neulpur Bazaar, which is under the jurisdiction of the Dharmsala police, late on August 24. Although five of them are from Rajasthan, police sources reported that they had been found to be in possession of Rs 3.68 lakh in stolen money.
According to the sources, they are also suspected of taking part in a similar incident that occurred at Haripur Bazaar in the district's Kuakhia police limits, when thieves stole Rs 3.92 lakh by smashing the teller machine with a gas cutter.
More people may have been involved in the ATM theft crimes, according to police.
