Cyclone Jawad: NDRF deploys 64 NDRF teams, 17 for Odisha
Bhubaneswar: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has set up 64 teams to deal with the aftermath of the impending cyclonic storm "Jawad," which is expected to hit Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed on this by the NDRF during a review meeting.
Odisha is represented by 17 of the 64 teams pledged by the NDRF for Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The National Disaster Response Force has deployed 12 teams, with another five on standby, according to NDRF tweets.
A low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is projected to build into Cyclone Jawad, which is expected to hit the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on December 4th morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
All major MeT models, including INCOIS, NCEP-GFS, ECMWF, and ACCESS-G3, anticipate the storm will make landfall to the south of Puri about 12 p.m. on Sunday.
In Puri and Jagatsinghpur, wind speeds are expected to reach 90 kmph with gusts up to 100 kmph. It said that gales up to 60-80 kmph could hit Ganjam, Khurda, Kendrapada, and Cuttack at the time of landfall.
The system will move over Jagatsinghpur and the neighbouring Kendrapada districts after landfall, before emerging in the northwest Bay of Bengal. After that, the weaker system would travel to West Bengal.
