Cyclonic circulation over BoB triggers rain in Odisha, yellow warning

Bhubaneswar: Due to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, heavy rain has been falling in a number of Odisha districts since Sunday morning.

According to the regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal by September 20 as a result of the cyclonic circulation that emerged over the southeast and adjacent eastcentral Bay of Bengal on Saturday.

Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Gajapati have all received a yellow rain warning, while 21 other districts have received a yellow thunderstorm and lightning alert.

On September 20, one or two locations in Boudh, Angul, Sonepur, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi are predicted to get heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm). Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada, and Rayagada have all received a heavy rainfall alert for one or more locations during this time.

Squally weather with gusty surface wind speeds of 45 to 55 kmph is likely over the deep sea of west central adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on September 20, along and off the Odisha coast, and west central adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on September 21 and 22 due to the expected low-pressure area and strong monsoon current.

Fishermen have been cautioned not to enter the deep sea on September 20 in the west-central area bordering the northwest Bay of Bengal.

The system was expected to have an impact on coastal Odisha up until September 20, but was expected to proceed in a north-westerly direction towards western Odisha and Chhattisgarh starting on September 21.

Over Odisha, mild to moderate rainfall would start in the late afternoon of September 19 and last until the evening of September 22. On September 19 and 20, there will be some moderate rainfall in the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Koraput; however, on the night of September 20, the rain will shift to north Odisha.

The advisory warned that severe to very heavy rain could occur in one or two locations in the western Odisha districts on September 21 and 22, while Bhubaneswar city could receive moderate rain on September 20 and 21.
