Dacoit Gang busted in Dhenkanal, 5 arrested

Dhenkanal: A 5-member dacoit group that police had wanted for years for their involvement in many incidents has been apprehended.

Dhenkanal district SP Gyan Ranjan Mohapatra told reporters on Tuesday that the five members of the gang were apprehended by police on Monday night while traveling on a motorcycle and a car on National Highway 55 in Jhargadia under Dhenkanal Sadr police limits.

The police crew searched the vehicles on suspicion and discovered a rifle, a blade, a packet of chilli powder, and 24 gram of brown sugar. They were arrested and their identities were verified by the police.

During questioning, they admitted to participating in numerous looting, burglary, and extortion cases in Dhenkanal and its surrounding districts. Three of them were from Ganjam, one from Cuttack's Banki, and one from Dhenkanal.

On the basis of the gang, the police also raided a location in Cuttack and retrieved various looted items. Gold jewelry, a CCTV hard disk, a television, and Rs 25,000 in cash were among the items. These included materials taken from Ranjana Tripathy's home in Dhenkanal Sadar on December 24, last year. At the time, a case was filed in this regard.

According to the SP, the five people also revealed that they created the gang while they were in jail for various offenses some time ago. In addition, another person affiliated with the group has been apprehended.

According to the SP, one of the gang members has been recognized as a supari murderer, and an inquiry into other gang members is ongoing.
