Elephant Carcass with Missing Tusk Discovered in Ganjam

Berhampur: A decomposing elephant's carcass lacking one of its tusks was found in a forest in the Ganjam region of Odisha.

On Wednesday night, the neighbourhood residents discovered the tusker's carcass in a cashew forest close to Kandhanuapalli hamlet within the Jagannathprasad forest area. Dhanurdhar Behera, a forest beat guard from Bidipur, and Umakant Dash, a forest officer from Jagnathprasad, headed to the scene after being told.

Later, Bikram Dev, an assistant conservator of forests (ACF), and other forest guardians went to the forest and guarded the carcass.

The 40-year-old elephant's death from electricity was believed by the forest officials based on a preliminary assessment. There found a broken electrical wire next to the tusker's body. On its back, there was a gunshot wound as well.

The elephant's right tusk is gone, thus the forest officers assumed that poachers may have killed the elephant to obtain the tusk. They said that the cause of death would be determined once the post-mortem report was received.

Several accounts claim that on July 17, an elephant herd that included a female, a tusker, and a baby entered the North Ghumusara forest range from the South Ghumusara area. It's possible that the dead tusker belonged to the herd.

It should be noted that on July 6, an elephant's carcass was discovered in the Mujagad range. Both of its tusks were absent. Later, the Forest officials had detained three people in connection with this case and had found the tusks.
