Former Odisha MLA Umesh Chandra Swain dies at 74

Bhubaneswar: Umesh Chandra Swain, a former MLA from Balikuda, died on Wednesday morning at his Bhubaneswar home after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 74 years old at the time.

Swain was born on November 15, 1948, in Machhagaon, Jagatsinghpur district. After completing his degree in 1972, he entered politics.

He served as a member of the Balikuda Assembly Constituency as a Janata Dal candidate from 1977 to 1980 and 1990 to 1995, and as an Indian National Congress candidate from 2000 to 2004 and 2004 to 2009.

He went above his duties as an MLA, constantly going above and beyond, especially during floods and cyclones.

Swain, a close associate of former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, was instrumental in the development of Jagatsinghpur's Talamala neighbourhood.

His final rituals would be done in his hometown of Machhagaon village in Jagatsinghpur district, according to his family.
