Bhubaneswar: Subhrangshu Senapati became the fifth Odia cricketer to sign an IPL contract when he was selected by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 20 lakh at the players' auction on Sunday.

Haladar Das made his IPL debut for Deccan Chargers in 2008, the first season of the league. In the home game against Mumbai Indians, the wicketkeeper-batsman only managed to score two runs.

The team's first-choice wicketkeeper was Australian great and hard-hitting batsman Adam Gilchrist, who made only one appearance.

Das continued to play domestic cricket after being released by the Deccan Chargers after that season. In 2016, he played his last first-class match.

Former state captain Biplab Samantray is the Odisha cricketer with the most IPL experience. Between 2012 and 2015, he appeared in nine matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Samantray made his Ranji debut for Odisha in the 2010-11 season, when he was a steady right-handed batsman and an occasional medium-pacer. He has accumulated 2046 runs in 46 first-class matches. He has 852 runs in 32 List A games and 558 runs in 41 T20 games.

Samantray, 33, was a member of the East Zone team that won the Duleep Trophy for the first time in 2011-12.

Two more Odia players participated in the IPL but did not represent the state.

Pragyan Ojha, a former India left-arm spinner who played for the Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians, never represented his own country. In contrast, allrounder Abhisek Raut played for Rajasthan Royals in the 2009 IPL, which was held in South Africa, but he was a member of the Maharashtra Ranji squad at the time.
